There's another arm on the side nearest the viewer, but it was omitted to increase the clarity of the drawing.As you might guess, there are various interchangeable "hands" available for different tasks.

The original idea behind this was a replacement for wheelchairs, to do away with unsightly retrofitted wheelchair ramps on historic buildings.  However, the design suffers from 2 main drawbacks:

1.  The "Spiderchair" is rather bigger and more bulky than the wheelchairs it is meant to replace

2.  Anyone using a "Spiderchair" would be so darn creepy that it just wouldn't catch on.
