3D printing experiments

I've taken the plunge and invested in a 3D printer, so I've spent the last fortnight experimenting with it.
I didn't really have a reason for this - I was just trying to find out what the printer could do.
Since I had the file, I tried printing the papercraft experiment dragon head. After 3 or 4 failed attempts, I managed to get a successful print.

A friend at work asked if I could make him a tracker for his D&D game.  This was what I came up with after a couple of hours.

Greebling Practice - stage 5

First attempt at landing gear - simple telescopic design.  Unfortunately, it looked to flimsy for the size of the ship, so was ditched.

2nd try - a sturdier-looking double-folding design, with twin shock-absorbers.

Greebling practice - stage 4

The upper surface is more-or-less fully panelled, so starting work on the underside.

Also, I've substituted an occlusion pass for the wireframe, as the wireframe was getting so dense it was hiding details

Greebling practice - stage 3

Detailed the gun turrets, and added yet more panels

Greebing practice - stage 2

I've tweaked the turret design, and added all the greebles from the concept painting.  Next - the other side of the ship

Greeble Practice - Block out

Decided to turn the greeble-practice ship painting into a model
Currently I've finished the block out, with the major shapes.  I'm trying to treat it a bit like building a physical model, so bits like the ridged pipe are already done.

Maya to Papercraft Experiment

I wanted to try and turn a 3D model into a physical model, so I gave it a go.

First step was to make a simple model (above). Then, each face had to be individually mapped, using planar mapping with "best plane" selected; and projection width & height set to 10

Unfortunately, this just produced 329 separate faces that needed to be joined into a net that could be build, and that was a process of trial and error - the first attempt turned out to be unbuildable.

2nd attempt at a net (this one turned out to be buildable)

I attempted to make a sturdier version out of plasticard, but 2mm polystyrene sheet proved a bit too thick.

World Arrows

World Arrows from Daniel Rolph on Vimeo.

This is done entirely in After Effects and Photoshop - there are over 180 layers in total, in over 60 different precomps.  On the other hand, each arrow can be adjusted individually.

Knight Concept

This developed from a doodle of a helmet - see below

I really wish I'd used references when trying to draw the horse now

Airport Plein Air

This was done at Heathrow terminal 2, waiting to catch a plane (in fact, it turned out, the plane I was painting).  Total time ~ 60 minutes

New Year, New Start

I can't believe it's been over a year since I last updated this blog. However, it's time to fix that - starting by uploading the stuff I did last year. First up, some random robots
